IP lookup: location, network provider and ASN explained

Understand what an IP lookup can tell you about a public address, why location can differ from your device, and when to use registration data.

Start with the right address

IP Lookup accepts a public IPv4 or IPv6 address. Use the address from the actual connection or log entry you are investigating. If you begin with a domain, resolve it first and record which answer you checked. A website using a CDN can publish several addresses; information about one answer does not identify every server behind the site.

Read location as an estimate

An IP location is a network-based estimate, not a GPS measurement or a street address. A VPN exit, corporate gateway or mobile provider may appear in a different city from the device. Provider databases can also disagree or lag behind reassignment. Use the result to form a network troubleshooting hypothesis, then verify it with connection data instead of treating a city label as a person’s location.

Separate provider, allocation and application owner

The organization or network shown may be the connectivity provider rather than the business operating the website. An autonomous system number, when available, helps identify a network’s routing organization; registration data describes allocated address resources. Shared hosting and reverse proxies add more layers. Use WHOIS / RDAP for registry-published information and Reverse DNS for a published PTR name.

Compare IPv4 and IPv6 independently

Your connection can use different public addresses, routes or providers for IPv4 and IPv6. Looking up one address does not explain the other. When results appear inconsistent, note the address family, whether a VPN is active, and the time of the test. Share only the details needed for troubleshooting. A location or provider label alone does not establish that an address is malicious or trustworthy.

What to check next

  1. Copy the exact public IP from the connection being investigated.
  2. Compare provider and location with your network or VPN setup.
  3. Use RDAP and reverse DNS when more network context is needed.

Common questions

Can IP Lookup reveal a home address?

No. The result is network information and approximate geography, not a verified residential address.

Why do two lookup services show different cities?

They can use different data and update schedules. VPNs, mobile networks and reassigned addresses also complicate location estimates.
