How to use Traceroute

Enter a public hostname or IP address and run the tool after verification. The output follows the route visible from the test location. Supports public IPv4 and native IPv6 addresses. For a domain, choose Auto IP, IPv4 or IPv6; Auto prefers IPv4 and uses IPv6 for IPv6-only domains. IPv6 connections require IPv6 connectivity at the test location.

Understanding the results

Read hops in order. Some routers do not return diagnostic replies, so missing hops do not establish packet loss for normal traffic. Routes and timing can differ from your device's connection.

What do asterisks mean in a traceroute?

An asterisk means no reply arrived before that hop timed out. Some routers filter diagnostic traffic while forwarding normal connections. Check later hops and the destination before concluding the route is broken.
